From one extreme to another

Wednesday was another rainy, overcast day but we decided to at least make an attempt to go up Tracy Arm, a 22 mile fjord with Sawyer Glacier at its head. It’s a popular spot in beautiful weather, but low visibility discourages boaters; we saw only three other vessels along our way. All hands on deck helped make the passage between floating icebergs manageable, with everyone taking turns at the helm. It was worth the effort. We marveled at the steep walls of the fjord peeking out of the fog, and the turquoise, sometimes jade-colored, water. At the head of the inlet the ice was too dense to navigate, so we kept a safe distance, just enjoying that we’d made it to Sawyer.

From Tracy Arm we headed north, arriving in Juneau Thursday morning. We’d gone from being one of few boats, to being in cruise ship central. Juneau hosts about five cruise ships a day, and the town was hopping with tourists. We were glad to arrive there and tie up for the night, and happy to leave Friday morning. We’re currently underway to our next stop at Funter Bay Marine Park.

  1. I continue to follow your journey and love all the pictures. You really are capturing the beauty of your trip. You have probably left Juneau by now. A woman who is a childhood friend and one I babysat years ago lived in Juneau for several years. I think she has now moved to Gustavus. I have wanted to go to Alaska for a long time. Your pictures are taking me on the journey! Stay safe and hope there are no more “snags!” Nancy
