Local color

Saturday we awake to beautiful, cloudless skies. Although temperatures have not been out of the 50s, the sunshine feels warm and promising. Moreover, we have a plan for repairs! It took two days, but Bob was able to order a replacement windlass gearbox yesterday. Overnighting it from the East Coast means it should be here on Monday; with luck the repair may happen Tuesday and we can leave Wednesday. Fingers are crossed.

Meanwhile, we are content living in Wrangell. Commercial crabbing season opens on Sunday and the fishermen and women are getting ready. Yesterday, a diver on the boat behind us was changing her zincs (she spearfishes!) and she agreed to check Free Spirit’s underside. Her discovery of sea life attached to the prop may be the root of their problem. She couldn’t fix it, but it gives our friends information that will be helpful for their Tuesday haul out. Last night we enjoyed happy hour and pizza with fellow boaters from My Iggy, Lollygag and Free Spirit. Today is Flag Day, the town is dressed in red, white and blue, and we are headed out to savor the sun before rain moves into the region next week.
