Slow start

The last evening at home port was calm and uneventful. Thanks to Mark (mechanic), Brent (tech guru) and Captain Bob, we were ready. Up early Saturday, we fought a strong current, making slow progress to Bedwell Harbor, our Canadian Customs reporting station, where agents decided to board our vessel to conduct a search. This is their right, though we’ve never experienced it on our many trips into Canada. We were specific and detailed declaring what was aboard, but we’ve heard painful stories from fellow boaters about aggressive searches. We had to wait on the dock half an hour during the search, but the agents lightened up when they found nothing that was not declared. Like all of us, they just want people to be honest with them. Done with that, we made way to Galiano Island where we spent a relaxing night in Montague Harbor. Meanwhile, fellow boaters on Free Spirit had generator problems and had to break off for Sidney, BC. We’ll meet up today in Nanaimo, then wait for a good weather window to cross Georgia Strait. We’d hoped to be farther north by day 2, but time was built in for delays such as these (though we’d rather not use the time so early in the trip).
