Sunshine coast

The Sunshine Coast, north of Vancouver on BC’s mainland, invites travelers to slow their pace. We’re doing that, taking time to explore the land, hike and enjoy some lazy afternoons. After Campbell River we spent several days in Pender Harbor, then moved to Backeddy in Egmont, hiking Skookumchuck trail three times – once at ebb to watch whirlpools form, a second at flood to see the rushing water create standing waves, a third for irresistible cinnamon rolls at Skookumchuck Bakery. Stunning views continue to make us pause.

Hearty kayakers gather at Skookumchuck’s flood tide to ride waves created by fast moving water. On an extra large flood, current speed can exceed 18 mph.

It’s becoming hard to keep track of the days. Is it Monday? Tuesday? 19th? 20th? Seasons are more obvious as days grow shorter and signs of fall begin to show themselves.

This rainy morning we leave Backeddy for a few days in Hotham Sound to see the Harmony Islands.

  1. Hi Cuz,
Cool! Tim and I kayaked Skookumchuck and ate at the bakery and the Back Water Grill. We camped out there for several days on our kayak odyssey in 1995. Fond memories.😊❤️
