Close call

It’s customary to call “Securite” and announce your vessel’s entrance into Dodd Narrows, as there’s only enough space for boats to travel single file through its smallest point. Oversized vessels, like tugs hauling logging rafts in the video below, announce well ahead of time when they’ll enter the narrows so pleasure craft can plan safe passage.

We easily made the cruise through Dodd Narrows a bit ahead of slack tide, following a few other boaters. Wider at the south end, the walls of the ravine taper at the north; it’s easy to see why this channel intimidates newcomers.

Proud of ourselves for successful passage, we let our guard down and almost hit Oregon rock, marked by buoy P13 in the busy bay, just outside of our Nanimo slip assignment for the night. Another lesson learned: stay vigilant until safely anchored or tied up for the night. The remainder of our time in Nanimo was uneventful. Our meal out included sampling the famous Nanimo Bar then back to the boat where we acquired local knowledge from slip neighbors as the sun set.

We made an early departure from Nanimo this morning and crossed the Strait of Georgia, following a flotilla of three who were familiar with the waters, then revised our destination from Pender Harbor to the further northern port of Powell River, the fjords and rugged mountains of BC in sight for much of the day.

We anticipate being at anchor in Desolation Sound tomorrow evening, after a fuel stop in Lund. From there, it’s on to Toba Wilderness to pick up John and Kim on Thursday.

  1. Scenery looks stunning! I am going to have to try the nanaimo bar recipe that I found on the website!

    1. Send me a review if you try it. I’ve got a recipe in my go-to cookbook and have never made them – now I’m curious. Hope you and N had a great stay in Napa. 👩‍👧

  2. Hi Cuz,
More beautiful pictures and experiences! Be sure to have a pastry at Nancy’s bakery in Lund, and wave at MaryKay’s sister and brother-in-law as you pass by Bliss Landing. They are in the house at the point of land on the corner as you come through the passage going north. Too bad we didn’t know you were going to be there as you could have moored at Bliss and met Dell and Pat Keehn (very nice people). MK and I have spent time at Bliss, Desolation Sound, Lund, and many other islands. It’s a lovely place!

    1. We tooted our horn to Dell and Pat when we passed Bliss! I met them when Walter was at Virginia Mason so many years ago. Lovely people … must run in MK’s family. Maybe join us next year? Meanwhile, have a wonderful adventure on the river. Love you, Cuz!
