The first trip to Anacapa Island was in a 13 foot Boston Whaler, not recommended in the often rough waters surrounding the four northern Channel Islands. Kama Hele, established in 2015, provided a whole new way to explore Channel Islands and southern California waters. Coast Guard classes supplied outstanding training but the best lessons were learned by doing – yeah, making mistakes. But along with the ‘oops’ experiences were once-in-a-lifetime events, like seeing a pair of blue whales in a mating dance off Palos Verdes, Thanksgiving dinner on a mooring in Avalon, hosting a wedding in Channel Islands Harbor, going into Painted Cave, and those times with family and friends that were not recorded or remembered because they were remarkable but because they were the simple happy times that deepen relationships. Now it’s time to say Aloha to our home port and edge forward to the Pacific Northwest. Mark and Diana … how we will miss being your neighbors!
