Leaving Nanaimo we had our first orca sighting, and the two traveled next to us for a few miles. After crossing Georgia Strait and heading to Desolation Sound, we opted to anchor in Cortes Bay instead of Refuge Cove due to conditions. Wednesday we passed through the triple rapids between Stuart Island and Dent, timed at slack water, in order to avoid strong northwesterly winds blowing in Johnstone Strait. This morning Johnstone is calm with a favorable current, so we rose at 5 to get an early start and were treated with a glorious sunrise.

Early in the season, there’s still snow on higher mountain peaks and few vessels on the water. Johnstone Strait, early Thursday morning. Expecting rain today.
